Editorial Review
SquareSoft has always had a sure-fire hit when releasing any of their Final Fantasy titles, and Final Fantasy VIII should be no exception. The basis of a good RPG (role-playing game) has always been the story; spectacular graphics are secondary. Final Fantasy VIII's involved and interesting story line is filled with great twists, well-developed characters, suspense, and romance. As an added bonus, the graphics are beautiful. Everything--from the low-lit jazz club to the steam-filled railroad tunnels--is gorgeous and perfectly sets the mood and tone of a scene.

The game mechanics are standard fare for an RPG: acquisition of items and spells, turn-based combat, experience points earned in combat allowing advances in levels. From exploration to battles to dialogue, Final Fantasy VIII has it all. However, Final Fantasy VIII falls to that great weakness of RPGs: random battles. While necessary for advancing in levels, the battles occur with such frequency that they can grow annoying, making for a tedious game experience.

The epic storyline spans four discs--over 40 hours of gameplay--and is based around a mercenary cadet who finds himself caught up with an underground rebel faction. He winds up in a plot to assassinate the sorceress who has just seized power from the president.

You could complain of limited replay value, but this gripe is of no consequence: the game is such a satisfying experience, it doesn't require replay. Final Fantasy VIII is easily worth both the hype and the wait. You can't buy a much better game. --John Cocking

Pros:

  • A story to beat all stories
  • Characters worth caring about
  • Hey--it's from SquareSoft
  • Stunning animations
Cons:
  • Too many random battles
  • Combat is, as always, turn-based and offers minimal excitement
  • Weak souls might give up after two or three discs of play

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Final Fantasy   September 6, 2010
Ker Thao (Saint Paul, MN USA)
Final Fantasy 8 is about Squall Leonhart and his companions as they become a part of a struggle to stop evil from destroying the planet. The graphics was great and looking better than Final Fantasy 7. The sound was awesome. The leveling up system is the same where you fight and level up, but a new junction system is introduced for enhancing the character's statuses. For my opinion the junction system is annoying and helpful in a way, but you will see what I am talking about when you play the game. The story is great and will make you dwell in it. So get this game and you will enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars A great game   September 5, 2010

Final Fantasy VIII is one of my favorities. It did take some getting used to the magic draw system but after I got the hang of it it became second nature to draw magic from enemies and fun. The draw back (no pun intended) was how time consuming it can be if you are wanting as much magic as possible. It became such a habit to draw magic that when I started another ff game I wanted to draw magic.

In this game you have no armour so Magic has to be conjunctioned and this is how you protect yourself from statis effects. The Gardian Force (espers) has to be conjunctioned as well to use magic in the first place which can be a pain to deal with especially when you don't use them much. But I like these especially diablo. Hated them in FFXII and didn't use them.

One of the cons in this game or it can be a pro, the fiends or enemies will level up with you, so in other words, as you get stronger so do they but as they level up so do their magic.

I love the characters in this game with Squall ( I always rename to riptide or forest ) being my favorite. One of the things I really like is the salary system. You get paid according to your testing level. You can increase it by taking a test about the game about questions such as what weapons they use or statis effects, but don't worry it is multiple choice. If you find this frustating, you can always cheat by going online for all the answers but if you like to challenge yourself you will not do this. Be warned though, your their salary can be reduced by your actions in battle. I don't really understand how this works because I never bothered finding out.

There are always things I really like and dislike about all the ff games. One of the things that irrated me was having to conjunction the commands I wanted to use such as Magic, Draw, Items, and GF (Gardian Force). You cannot use them all. You are allowed only four with Attack being automatic. I try to have one with Items and all with magic. I give magic to the one that couldn't draw. Sharing magic is one of the pros.

In my opinion, Final Fantasy VIII is one of the best ff games. It has a different feel than the previous ones. Instead of being Knights, Monks, and Mages they are Mercenaries that are hired to help others. Interesting and fun to play. I won't go into the story or such, you need to discover that for yourself.

I would encourage other Final Fantasy Fans to purchase this game if they haven't already.

5 out of 5 stars A little plot heavy at times   August 26, 2010

Overall FF8 was just a great experience to play. It was long enough and provided enough challenge to stay interesting. Weirdly enough, i really liked the junction system because if you could understand it (which is admittedly harder than it seems) the actual fighting is so much easier, and its rare for a game to really reward meticulous planning to this extent. Junctions also minimize the annoyance of picking characters for your main party, since the root of the characters strength came from the junctions and not them themselves, so they could be interchanged much easier than in most other Final fantasies. My biggest problem with this game was that there were definitely some parts where it was hard to go on. Long drawn out scenes of plot development or emotions. Don't get me wrong, i love a good romantic subplot, but i also don't need to spend 20 minutes pushing X as people float through space. With that being said, i still loved the story and my complaints are usually about small details instead of actual problems. The only thing that i didn't really understand was that once you start the last dungeon, you cant visit anything on the map besides chocobo forests. Plot-wise, i understand why but it was still a bit of a unwarned about nuisance.

5 out of 5 stars Not The Best Final Fantasy Game But......   August 2, 2010

I Bought This Game To Continue With My Final Fantasy Collection And To Have A Game To Play During Summer So I Got This. When I First Got The Game I Was Very Excited (It Also Had A Good Packaging) And I Started The Game And After I Saw That Little Intro That Showed Some Screenshots Of The Game And Also The Names Of Some Of The People Who Worked On It I Was Happy. But Then I Started A New Game And Another Intro Comes Out, Holy Mother Of God Was The Second Intro Awesome It Shows Rinoa And Edea (The Lead Female Character And The Other One Of The Villains) Minding Their Own Business, And Then It Shows Squall And Seifer (Main Character And His Rival) Having An Epic Battle While A Great Musical Piece Entitled "Liberi Fatali" Plays In The Background And The Game Starts. From Then On You Start Playing The Game I'm Not Gonna Spoil Anything Else About The Story But It's Very Interesting (Unlike FFV) The Characters Are Also Likable Although A Little Cliched At Times (Unlike FFV) The Music Is Awesome In Every Way And It Entertains While You Spend Hours Walking And Fighting (FFV Had Good Music No Complaints There) The Gameplay Was My Only Problem With This Game It's Just Not As Exciting As FFIV,VI And VII But I Liked The Costumizing System (Junction System) I Also Disliked The Fact That You Learn Spells By Finding Them On The Floor And You Can Buy New Weapons By Reading Magazines And Some Of The Summonings (GF In This Game) Are In The Most Unexpected Places Too Rookies Might Have A Hard Time Looking For These Things But Overall I Highly Recommend This Game To Any Final Fantasy Fan, And Some RPG Fans Too, Enjoy

5 out of 5 stars Companies don't make games like this anymore....   July 27, 2010
Neyen (Puerto Rico)
I absolutely love this game! This game doesn't even compare to ff13. Square Enix does not make games like this anymore.
